Sorry to See You Go

Posted in marketing | No Comments »

Good bye, Roamans!  So long, Lane Bryant!  Adios, Avenue! I finally got around to unsubscribing from your email marketing messages.  I’m sure it won’t matter to you, because even though I haven’t opened or clicked on any of your messages for over a year, you kept on sending them to me.

I’m sure you would have continued to send them to me forever if I hadn’t finally gotten around to doing a little inbox housekeeping.  When I clicked on the unsubscribe link, you all asked me for my email address like you don’t even know me.  Some of you even said it would take seven days to process my request.  Seven days?  That’s like seven years in Internet time.  One (Roamans) gave the option of reducing the frequency of the messages, which is a good option to offer.

You all took me to pages saying you were sorry to see me go, but none of you asked me why I was going.  If you did, you might have found out that your clothes don’t fit me anymore, and you could have referred me to your sister companies that are not plus-sized.

So you’re sorry to see me go, but you haven’t noticed I haven’t been there for a long time, you don’t know who I am, and you don’t care why I’m going.

I’m not sorry to see you go!

*Full disclosure: I work for Lyris, Inc, an ESP, and write about email marketing.  But this is strictly personal about my experience with these email marketers.
