Early Exercisers: How Do You Do It?

Posted on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 at 8:51 am

I’ve been having a big problem with exercise classes at my local Y.  My favorite class moved from 5 to 5:30, and so I couldn’t do it (need to pick up the kids by 6:30).  The one class that was at 5:00 is now changing to a zumba class, and so far I’m not feeling the love for zumba.

So if after work won’t work, how about before work?  The Y has classes at 5:30 and 6:00 am, which would give me time to exercise and get to work by 8.

I thought I’d give it a try this morning.  I was totally ready!  I had my gym clothes out, my bag packed with my clothes, towel, and shower gear.  I set my alarm.  I was doing it!

My alarm went off this morning at 5:30.  And… I went back to sleep.  Doing a bootcamp at 6 am was just more than I could imagine.  The idea of doing burpees and mountain climbers before even a cup of coffee…

So you early exercisers, HOW DO YOU DO IT?

I can’t really answer that question because I don’t do that early. The earliest that I can muster is 10:00 a.m. and my motivation and energy is lacking at that hour.

Good luck with your exercise conundrum.

I am not the one to ask, because, well, I can’t do it either. Exercise that has to happen at 5:30 is exercise that’s not happening. Any chance of getting away at lunch? Don’t suppose your husband would be able to pick up the kids? Or hang in there with Zumba? Try another gym/rec class/cardio equipment? I actually love zumba and seek it out, but I could see if it’s not your thing, it’s not. The steps do get easier as you learn them, and in my case, I try not to be too worried about whether I’m doing it right or not. Dance solos are legitimate :)

I will try Zumba this Monday (sigh!). I’m also trying to work out at home to a video. It’s funny… working out on equipment used to be all I did, but now that I started classes that’s what I like. I think the important thing is to keep trying new things!

I tried Bikram yoga, for a 30-day period ($29). It was hard & also fun. Pulled muscles; next-door neighbor joining me; feeling like I’m entering a cult of another kind. All these people, at 6:00 am willing to sweat & ache, together, barely dressed.
I’ve come down w. a cold & felt as you did, today, trying to get the last class out of my 30-day period. No, went back to sleep. I’l stick w. swimming weekly at my Y.

Wow, Bikram! That’s serious. That’s hot yoga, yes? At least you’re getting out of a warm bed to go to a hot room! Very important in the winter.
